'Digital Factory' and 'Mobility' stand out

Siemens has announced its figures for the first quarter: the company is growing in terms of both order intake and sales - thanks to strong contributions from the Mobility and Digital Factory Divisions. In contrast, the result of the Industrial Business declined.

Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser: "The first quarter underscores the strength of our company. We are using the growth impetus of the global upturn and setting standards in industrial digitalization. We are aware of our opportunities and know our tasks."

Siemens increased its sales in the first quarter by 3% to €19.8 billion and grew its order intake by 14% to €22.5 billion. On a comparable basis - i.e. excluding currency translation and portfolio effects - order intake increased by 7% and sales by 1%. Siemens owes these figures to strong growth contributions from the Mobility and Digital Factory Divisions as well as new business, particularly resulting from the merger of Siemens' wind energy business with Gamesa.

Siemens recorded a dip in earnings in the Industrial Business, which fell by 14% to €2.2 billion. Siemens attributes this primarily to a very sharp decline in the Power and Gas segment, which outweighed the performance of the short-cycle businesses and Mobility. According to Siemens, negative currency effects also had a negative impact on the past quarter, while the Group benefited from a portfolio gain in the previous year. The earnings margin of the Industrial Business amounted to 11% in the first quarter of 2018. Profit after tax rose by 12% to €2.2 billion.
