'Invent a Chip' competition
Smart microchip ideas receive awards
The 'Invent a Chip' competition for young scientists organized by the VDE and the BMBF took place for the 15th time. Five microchip ideas under the motto 'Internet of Things' convinced the jury the most. The first prize of 3000 euros was awarded twice this year.
Ten teams from a total of 2,600 participants qualified to implement their idea in this round of the competition. The prize: in a practical workshop at Leibniz Universität Hannover, they were able to start working on the chip design for their idea. They have now presented their microchips to the public at the VDE Congress in Mannheim. The VDE and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) have now awarded prizes for the most innovative microchip ideas. This year, the jury awarded the first prize of 3000 euros twice. "This is a first and shows how strong the field of participants is," said VDE Chairman Ansgar Hinz. The winners can expect contacts with industry and universities as well as the opportunity to present their projects at trade fairs. They will also be included in the selection process for a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation.
In the past 15 years since 'Invent a Chip' was launched, a total of 25,000 boys and girls have participated with 6,500 chip ideas. Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, Federal Minister of Education and Research (BMBF), sees great potential in young people: "In 'Invent a Chip', students not only develop circuits, but also use them to build a complete application. Young people implement their good ideas step by step, learn a new way of programming, work together in teams and are not afraid of new technologies. This shows that Germany's schoolchildren have what it takes for digital inventions. Our country is dependent on these researchers and specialists in the digital age."
