'Invent a Chip' competitionSmart microchip ideas receive awards
The 'Invent a Chip' competition for young scientists organized by the VDE and the BMBF took place for the 15th time. Five microchip ideas under the motto 'Internet of Things' convinced the jury the most. The first prize of 3000 euros was awarded twice this year.

Third place in the 2016 Invent-a-Chip competition and prize money of 1,000 euros went to Verena Glatt from Gewerbeschule Bühl. She wants to relieve overtired parents who have so far been unnecessarily startled by their baby's slight restlessness. To this end, she developed a soothing baby cradle that is controlled by an integrated microchip: "If the child moves or kicks, the bed starts to rock slightly and a lullaby starts," she says. If the child does not calm down, a wristband vibrates and informs the parents.
