Private 5G networks
Verizon launches with Nokia
Verizon Business is now introducing a 5G platform for companies in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The offering is being jointly realized in a partnership with Nokia.
A private 5G platform enables companies to set up a dedicated 5G network for industrial use on their premises. In addition to the extremely low latency and increased speed, a key benefit of this solution is that companies can set up a customized mobile network, eliminating the need to transmit data over public networks.
A private 5G network is a self-contained network whose components are located entirely in one installation. It consists of smaller radio masts (micro towers) and small radio base stations (small cells) and is connected to the local area network (LAN) and the company applications. The Verizon offering utilizes Nokia's Digital Automation Cloud, a private wireless network solution with automation capabilities that enables the deployment of applications via a web-based interface.
Verizon sees itself as a global leader in 5G initiatives. In addition to its existing 5G lab and production studio in London, the company recently announced a 5G roaming service in South Korea and is a founding member of the 5G Future Forum, a group of leading global 5G providers accelerating the deployment of 5G and interoperable multi-access edge computing (MEC)-enabled solutions.
This announcement follows recent announcements of MEC partnerships with Microsoft, Cisco, IBM and AWS. In August, Verizon announced the successful completion of lab trials with Corning and Samsung for its new 5G mmWave solutions for use in buildings.
