Abstract

IEEE 802.1AS-2024 defines a method for clock drift mitigation, specifically designed for systems with many hops between Grandmaster and end stations. In this talk, we give insights into the reasoning behind this feature and present real-world results using the Drift_Tracking TLV and its handling in PTP relays and end stations. Different scenarios for drift in Grandmaster and PTP relays complement the simulations done at IEEE in the context of the Industrial Automation profile IEC/IEEE 60802.

The Speakers

  • David McCall is a Senior Director of Industrial Standards at Intel Corporation. He brings over 20 years of experience in both technical and business aspects of the high-tech industry, with a focus on unlicensed wireless, communications software and standardisation.
He currently holds several leadership positions in various groups that are important to Industrial Automation: The Open Group's Open Process Automation Forum; the OPC Foundation's FLC Steering Committee; IEEE 802.1.
David also manages Intel's strategy for participation in many other organisations.  He joined Intel in 2011 following roles in a couple of startups including Vice President of the PC Business Unit at Bluetooth-leader CSR.  David hails from Northern Ireland and holds a Masters degree in Electronics from the University of Edinburgh.  He has called the USA home for the last 22 years.
  • Kilian Brunner is a researcher in the field of embedded systems at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences
  • Dr. Martin Ostertag is a senior lecturer and leads the “Communication Network Engineering” group at Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur/Switzerland. He spent 25 years in technical and managerial R&D positions at ABB and Schindler. He received his MSc. and Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.
