Siemens
The end of the secession era
When the Siemens Annual General Meeting on Wednesday marks the change in leadership of the industrial group from Joe Kaeser to Roland Busch, it will mark the end of an era that is far longer than the almost eight years that the Lower Bavarian has been at the helm of the company.
Kaeser has completed the reorganization that began under his predecessor Heinrich von Pierer in the 1990s.
The old industrial conglomerate, which manufactured telephones, washing machines, power plants, chips, medical devices, light bulbs and refrigerators, among other things, has become what Siemens calls a "focused technology company". Customers are not consumers but other companies. Anyone who buys a refrigerator with Siemens lettering on it today has had nothing to do with the company for a long time. Siemens also sold off its telephone systems, computers and cell phone divisions.
The Group has also repeatedly launched new companies on the stock market: Epcos, Infineon, Osram, Healthineers and Energy were floated, with varying degrees of success. Although Siemens still holds stakes in Healthineers and Energy, the conglomerate days are over.
The remaining company focuses primarily on three areas: Digital Industry, which looks after the automation of systems, Smart Infrastructure, which offers and connects energy systems and building technology, and Mobility, which manufactures trains and rail technology, among other things.
In fact, it is hardly conceivable to restructure even more without affecting the substance of the company, according to company circles. Moreover, Siemens is in a solid position and the share price is soaring. And the new boss has no personal reasons to restructure Siemens. He does not have to prove himself. His position in the company is far too strong for that. And last but not least, Busch has been a member of the Managing Board at Siemens since 2011 and was therefore not uninvolved in Kaeser's major restructuring. The era of major spin-offs should be over for Siemens.
