Mercedes Benz
RFID technology for Sprinter production
Mercedes Benz Vans wants to fully digitalize its production worldwide by 2025 - and has now reached a milestone with the introduction of RFID technology.
In total, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler's van division, plans to invest over 200 million euros in the expansion of intelligent production between 2017 and 2025. Frank Klein, Head of Operations Mercedes-Benz Vans: "With the upcoming new Sprinter, we are taking the next logical step in the further development of intelligent production at Mercedes-Benz Vans. With new technologies such as RFID, we want to leverage potential along the entire production process. Our aim is to have fully digitalized production worldwide by 2025."
Using RFID technology (radio-frequency identification), side mirrors and seats are automatically and contactlessly localized and identified by radio in a pilot phase. This takes place from the moment of delivery until the Sprinter leaves the assembly line. The aim is to digitally network up to 40 parts with the production system via RFID in Ludwigsfelde over the next few years. With the start-up of the new Sprinter, the technology will become an integral part of series production in Ludwigsfelde. Other Mercedes-Benz Vans sites are also to be equipped with it.
The project is being implemented in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF). The aim is to digitally network up to 40 parts with the production system in Ludwigsfelde using RFID over the next few years.
