Real-time Ethernet is a reality
Around 200 participants attended the 2nd Deterministic Ethernet Forum in Vienna at the beginning of May. The focus was on standardization topics and examples of successfully implemented applications in industry and the automotive sector relating to the real-time extension of standard Ethernet (TSN).
Industrial automation is facing a paradigm shift: open standards and the convergence of information and operational automation technology can no longer be stopped. Hans Wimmer, CEO of B&R, and Heiner Lang, Senior Vice President Technical Business Unit Industrial Applications at Bosch Rexroth, put forward a powerful argument in their joint keynote speech: "There is a gap between the field level and the control level for which the customer is no longer prepared to pay! But no provider will be able to solve this problem alone. We therefore need open standards," she appealed. Two important decisions by the supplier industry would point the way to the future: The decision in favor of OPC UA and in favor of TSN (Time Sensitive Networking) as recommended standards for Industry 4.0.
After these introductory words, testbed members of the Industrial Internet Consortium reported on the progress of the TSN testbed work, the expansion of the testbed to include a version installed in Germany and the concrete benefits of the work for the companies involved.
