Time Sensitive Networking
A new TSN working group
TSN has enormous potential for automation technology - the management of the ISW in Stuttgart is certain of this. In mid-May 2017, the institute therefore hosted the kick-off event for the 'TSN for Automation' industry working group.
"Now is the right time to think about what tomorrow's industrial communication will look like," said Institute Director Prof. Alexander Verl at the kick-off event for the industry working group. Around 60 representatives from automation providers and users have gathered at the Institute for Control Engineering and Machine Tools (ISW) to discuss the purpose, direction and practical activities of a possible working group with the institute's representatives. At the end of the information day, there are five points on the to-do list that the working group would like to tackle:
Firstly, a universal network interface for participants in TSN networks with coupling to OPC UA is to be designed. To this end, the working group wants to bundle existing stacks into a package that can be used directly, adapt them accordingly and ultimately make them available as an open source project.
Furthermore, a TSN lab is to be set up in Stuttgart in order to provide an exemplary structure of a convergent network infrastructure for demonstration and integration tests.
Participation in meetings and meetings of relevant committees - such as IIC, OPC Foundation, fieldbus organizations, VDMA, DFAM - are also on the action plan, as is the application for publicly funded joint research projects.
Finally, the plan is to meet four times a year to discuss and manage the activities of the working group.
It now remains to be seen whether there are enough companies that would like to participate in the working group. Participation in the activities is based on the payment of a membership fee. Membership can be ordered online until September 30, 2017.
