Porsche tests 5G network at Leipzig production site
Sports car manufacturer Porsche is now testing a 5G network in production at its Leipzig site. This is the first research network with the latest mobile communications standard in a Porsche production environment, the Group announced on Friday (26.11.).
It is designed to enable the secure transmission of signals in real time. To this end, the car manufacturer has entered into a partnership with Swedish network supplier Ericsson. The 5G network reportedly works via a private frequency spectrum, but is based on the same technology as commercial networks.
5G is being used at the Leipzig site in the body construction of the Macan sports car - albeit in a test cell and not yet in series production. Specialists there are testing the wireless transmission of robot signals in production.
Porsche is already using 5G at its development center in Weissach near Stuttgart in order to be able to test modern technologies for series use in cars more extensively. This involves, for example, predictive warning and assistance systems or automated driving functions, which are generally dependent on super-fast 5G internet.
The new 5G mobile technology is intended to ensure secure, faster and delay-free transmission of data between cars, people and machines - which experts believe is a prerequisite for making progress in autonomous driving trials. In addition to Porsche, many other car manufacturers are also working on this topic.
