5G test field
Hanover to get a 'digital twin'
With the new 5G mobile communications standard, Hanover is to receive a digital image that reflects the state capital three-dimensionally and in real time. It will start with the exhibition grounds.
The aim of the 5GAPS (5G Access to Public Spaces) project is, for example, to facilitate autonomous driving, the location of goods or the reservation of parking spaces, but also to expand tourist offers. Augmented reality applications are also possible, in which digital images are added in a location-based manner and can be called up using devices such as smartphones or special glasses.
At the presentation of the three-year project on Monday, Hanover's Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) spoke of a digital twin of the city that could help to use public space more intelligently. He is particularly interested in the topic of the traffic turnaround.
Exhibition grounds as a test laboratory
As a first step, parts of the exhibition grounds are to be recreated in order to develop the necessary software and test initial applications. Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG, described the trade fair as a test laboratory for new applications. One conceivable example of the use of 5G in industrial production would be "wireless robots whizzing through a factory". Dr. Köckler: "As a partner from the very beginning, we are delighted to be able to provide the real-world laboratory for this ambitious project with the infrastructure of the exhibition grounds and our private 5G campus network. As of today, we have equipped a total of six halls, all roads, all parking lots and the entire outdoor area on our site with Deutsche Telekom's 5G standard. The rest of the exhibition grounds, including all halls and buildings, will be successively connected to the super-fast generation of mobile communications. Innovative applications involving science, business and public administration are therefore a perfect fit for our 5G Smart Venue."
The project is being funded by the federal government with 3.85 million euros. It will also receive around 750,000 euros from partners in industry.
