OPC UA PubSub specification published

The OPC Foundation has released Part 14 of the OPC UA standard: known as Publish-Subscribe or "PubSub" for short. The specification extends the preferred area of application of OPC UA to include a wide range of advanced use cases down to the lowest field level.

Stefan Hoppe, OPC Foundation: "The new PubSub extension takes the OPC UA Eco system to a new level."

Specifically, PubSub extends the usability of OPC UA in microcontrollers, sensors and low-power embedded systems, for example, which generally require optimized communication with low latency in local networks. According to Stefan Hoppe, Vice President of the OPC Foundation, the first PubSub implementations have been realized in 8-bit controllers with only 2kByte SRAM. On the other hand, PubSub also enables the use of OPC UA in highly scalable cloud-based applications in which an almost unlimited number of edge data sources, such as sensors, can deliver their data securely to Internet-based broker applications.

Specifically, PubSub enables the use of OPC UA directly over the Internet (Wide Area Networks) by using popular cloud protocols such as MQTT and AMQP while retaining its key benefits such as end-to-end security and standardized data modeling. In addition, PubSub also enables the use of the User Data Protocol (UDP), which allows fault-tolerant communication with low latency to be realized in LANs.

According to Hoppe, the release of OPC UA PubSub is an important milestone and defines the fundamental base technology for further scenarios in the future, for example to transfer data through a real-time channel such as Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Thomas Burke, President of the OPC Foundation, continues: "By expanding the use cases of OPC UA, both inside and outside the enterprise, the Pub-Sub specification helps position OPC UA as a foundational standard that implements the universal interoperability of data connectivity and information integration required in the rapidly growing world of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Industry 4.0 and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications."
