Ethernet TSN
Switch manufacturers support Ethercat approach
At SPS IPC Drives 2017, the Ethercat Technology Group (ETG) presented its approach on how Ethercat will use TSN technologies. Now the switch manufacturers Moxa, Hirschmann, Hilscher and Xilinx have expressed their support for this approach.
According to ETG spokesperson Martin Rostan, the aforementioned manufacturers will implement Ethercat TSN stream adaptation in their TSN switches and infrastructure products. This will enable users to connect conventional Ethercat slave devices and networks directly to heterogeneous TSN domains without any changes to the Ethercat devices. The TSN stream adaptation, which connects the Ethercat segments to the TSN network, can be integrated in the TSN switch as well as in the first Ethercat device.
Oliver Kleineberg, Global CTO of Industrial Networking at Hirschmann, comments: "TSN stream adaptation allows the proven Ethercat technology to seamlessly connect to TSN networks. This means that Ethercat can immediately take advantage of TSN, creating a viable way to meet the demanding requirements of automation applications today and in the future. Christoph Fritsch, Industrial IoT, Scientific, & Medical Business Unit Director at Xilinx, explains the support as follows: "New automation technologies need embedded platforms with adaptable services and the right connectivity. TSN is a breakthrough that makes it easier to create new business models. The development teams at Xilinx and the network specialist SoC-e have therefore integrated Ethercat and TSN into the Xilinx Zynq SoCs, which means that TSN can already be used today."
