Innovative IoT gateway applications selected
What innovative applications and solutions can be implemented on the basis of an open IoT gateway? Engineers, makers and students worked on this in the 'Hackster Community IOT 2020 competition'. RS Components has now honored the winners.
Divided into two phases, the first part of the competition ran until the end of February 2017. In this phase, participants were asked to submit initial concept ideas for a possible solution in the field of industrial or home automation. The second phase began in March 2017 and involved the participants bringing their initial concepts to the implementation stage. Detailed information was now required, such as circuit diagrams, in-depth descriptions, programs and/or videos of the application being built.
What all solutions have in common is the open IoT gateway 'Simatic IoT 2020' from Siemens. It can be used to retrieve, process, analyze and send data from almost any type of device or network. The gateway offers many interfaces such as Ethernet, USB or Micro-SD and is compatible with open source software, including the Arduino DIE, Node-Red and Yocto Linux and can be programmed in high-level languages such as Java, C ++ and JSON. The IoT gateway is also expandable with Arduino shields or via an on-board PCIe port.
Heiko Luckhaupt, Sector Industry Marketing Manager at RS Components, summarizes: "The competition has produced an exceptionally wide range of highly innovative ideas including monitoring-based systems for use in local environments. They demonstrate very clearly the flexibility and functionality of the IOT2020". Although the device is mainly aimed at students, makers and geeks, he believes that the Hackster competition has shown the potential of the product for industry in particular.
