Inka Krischke,

Large-area scanning with just one barcode reader

Cognex has launched a controllable high-speed mirror. The technology was developed for use with the DataMan 470 barcode reader and optimizes the scanning and reading of barcodes on large fields of view.

The controllable mirror attachment extends the field of view of the DataMan 470 both vertically and horizontally and, according to the manufacturer Cognex, gives the 3MP and 5MP barcode readers an effective resolution that is greater than that of a 50MP sensor. Combined with the latest liquid lens technology, this system can dynamically change both the field of view and the depth of field. A single DataMan system with mirror attachment is suitable for applications that previously required high resolution and therefore multiple cameras. Examples include situations where small codes are spread over a large field of view, where physical constraints mean that working distances are short and external mirrors are not permitted, and applications that require the reading of long codes with a large overlap of the field of view or where there is a large difference between the minimum and maximum working distance. The steerable mirror is supplied pre-mounted to the front of the barcode reader and is compatible with existing brackets and cables. The device is configured with an integrated web-based setup wizard that allows operators to set up an application or adapt to new applications within minutes without prior training. After entering the application specifications, the wizard automatically calculates the optimal scan pattern.
