The digital twin - the heart of Industry 4.0

The industrial digital twin is becoming marketable. It promises interoperability across domain boundaries and the availability of all relevant data over the entire life cycle.

In this panel discussion, the board of the Industrial Digital Twin Association explains what the digital twin can achieve and what steps still need to be taken to establish the heart of Industry 4.0 in production.

About the speakers

Dr. Matthias Bölke studied electrical engineering and earned his doctorate in the field of robotics. After his academic career, he switched to industry and has been active in development, marketing and as CEO of Schneider Electric country organizations in various companies of the Schneider Group for 30 years. He spent more than half of this time abroad and is now based in Berlin in the global position of "Vice President Strategy Industrial Automation" at Schneider Electric. As part of his commitment to the ZVEI, he has been involved in the Asset Administration Shell for 3 years, in whose format Schneider Electric has already implemented the first partial models. Matthias Bölke is also a board member of ECLASS and a member of the DKE steering committee.

Dr. Horst G. Heinol-Heikkinen is Managing Director and founder of the Asentics Group.

Dr. Heinol-Heikkinen was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1963. He studied electrical engineering in Frankfurt and Siegen and completed his doctorate in the field of optical 3D image processing.

He was head of the research team for CMOS camera systems at the Center for Sensor Systems in Siegen. At the Battelle Institute in Frankfurt, he worked on projects for the European Space Agency (ESA) on optical inter-satellite links. He also worked at EADS in Friedrichshafen, where he headed a special R & D laboratory in the field of inter-satellite communications.

In 1996, he founded his first company - today's PMD Technologies. In 2001 he founded Asentics Vision Technology - a company with the brand core of complete solutions with industrial image processing and in 2009 Asentics Vario - a supplier of inspection machines for the rubber & plastics market.

He has been a member of the board of the VDMA Machine Vision Group since 2006. In 2009, he also became a board member of the VDMA Robotics + Automation Association. Within the VDMA, he initiated several Industry 4.0 activities and assumed responsibility for various working groups in the field of Cyber Physical Systems using OPC UA information modeling. In September 2020, he joined the new Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) as a founding member and was elected Deputy Chairman.

He is actively involved in advisory committees of Messe München-Automatica and Hannover Messe-Industrial Automation.

Karsten Schneider, board member of Profibus Nutzerorganisation e.V., studied electrical engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He joined Siemens AG more than 15 years ago in central research and development and has since worked in various fields of activity.

Among other things, Schneider was Head of Development for MES Components and Marketing Manager for Decentralized Peripherals. In this context, Schneider was also involved in the market launch of Profinet technology in February 2003 and gained further detailed knowledge of fieldbus technology as head of the PICC North America Competence Center and test laboratory for Profibus & Profinet in Johnson City, TN. From April 2012, he headed the 'Fieldbus Communication' strategy at Siemens and has been Director Standardization & Regulation there since 2015.
