5G + XR
From fantasy to reality
The XR industry - VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality) - will usher in a new Moore's Law, Philip Song from Huawei is certain of this. He explained what he means by this at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
During a keynote speech at the MWC, Philip Song, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei, provided insights into the XR sector. XR stands for Extended Reality and combines VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality). Song called on network operators and industry partners to take action to capitalize on the opportunities of 5G+XR.
Song likened the progress of the XR industry to the evolution of the smartphone industry, saying that many vendors are now offering XR devices for under $300, making the technology more affordable while still providing a next-generation user experience. XR development tools are also increasingly being used.
At the event, Huawei postulated a "new Moore's Law" for the XR industry to guide the expansion of capabilities of network operators and industry partners. "The demand for popular XR content is doubling every 18 to 24 months," paraphrased Philip Song. "In the next two to four years, XR content with a high frame rate (12K or even 24K) will become increasingly common." This type of premium content will consume network bandwidth and cloud resources at an exponential rate.
Enormous cloud resources required
In addition, the capacity of XR cloud services doubled every 18 to 24 months to significantly reduce the production costs of XR content. "This new Moore's Law should serve as a guideline for innovation in the XR industry and form a basis for XR development," explains the Huawei manager. Huawei itself adheres to this guideline. In the field of XR devices, Huawei has launched its innovative next-generation AR HUD, expanding XR applications. In terms of XR data transmission, Huawei presented innovative solutions such as 5G Massive MIMO and FTTR. The company has publicly committed to supporting a "Gigaverse" that provides ubiquitous gigabit access to support XR experiences anytime, anywhere.
Song concluded his presentation by calling on industry partners to work together in line with the "new Moore's Law" and seize this major development opportunity for the XR industry.
