'Hyperloop Pod Competition' 2018
Through the vacuum tube at 467 km/h
Traveling at almost the speed of sound with the Hyperloop superfast train - to make this vision a reality, SpaceX founder Elon Musk has launched the 'Hyperloop Pod Competition': the design by the team from the Technical University of Munich won for the third time.
Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation system initiated by Elon Musk. The concept aims to transport passenger and cargo capsules through vacuum tubes. Student teams around the world are working on the construction of prototypes of the passenger capsules - known as pods - as part of the 'Hyperloop Pod Competition'. In this year's competition, 20 teams with around 600 participants from all over the world came together at the end of July in Los Angeles at the pod test tube in front of the SpaceX headquarters.
The main aim of the competition is to send your own prototype of a pod through a tube as quickly as possible. But ultimately, only those teams were allowed to take part in a so-called 'run' that survived the strict technical approvals by SpaceX engineers and dry runs without a vacuum during the preceding Test Week. Thanks to a number of innovations, the team from the Technical University of Munich was able to top its previous year's result and leave the competition far behind.
