Hyperloop Pod Competition from SpaceX
The fastest pod comes from Munich
The pod of the WARR Hyperloop Team of the Technical University of Munich almost reached the speed of sound at the final of the Hyperloop Pod Competition in Los Angeles.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk launched the "Hyperloop Pod Competition" in 2015. The Hyperloop is the concept of a high-speed train that travels at almost the speed of sound in a tube with a partial vacuum. Teams of students from all over the world presented their concepts for the pod, the cabin capsule in which passengers are to be transported through the tube. 30 teams were selected to build their prototypes and compete against each other in the final.
From January 27 to 29, the time had come: 27 of the 30 selected teams traveled to Los Angeles to take part in the final at the SpaceX site. Among them was the WARR Hyperloop team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). WARR stands for "Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft Raumfahrt und Raketentechnik."
The final tests took place in the tube built especially for the competition. However, only three teams were actually allowed to drive in the evacuated tube: the students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, TU Delft and TUM.
On Sunday, the WARR Hyperloop team was then able to see their pod race through the tube. The pod shot to first place. The team received the prize for the "Fastest Pod". The trophy: a miniature pod made of titanium and signed by Elon Musk. TU Delft was also successful and received the prize for the technically best prototype.
