Smart shuttles at Cebit 2017

In March 2017, visitors to the Cebit trade fair in Hanover will be able to experience what has been running as a test in a Europe-wide pioneering project in Switzerland for several months: a ride in an autonomous 'SmartShuttle' - an overview of the key technical data.

Since the start of test operations in June 2016, the two Swiss Post 'SmartShuttles' have driven a total of around 2,500 kilometers and transported over 14,000 passengers. The test phase will continue until October 2017, with the vehicles making a "trip" to the Hanover Exhibition Center in March.

The two autonomous vehicles will transport visitors from the West 1 entrance across Hall 13 to Hall 12 at Cebit. The Swiss Post 'SmartShuttles' are currently in test operation in the old town of Sion in the canton of Valais: they serve several stops on a circular route over a distance of 1500 meters. At each stop there is a screen on which the position of the two vehicles can be seen in real time. Passengers can also find out the exact position of the shuttles via a smartphone app. This precise positioning is made possible by communication between a GPS sensor and a base station, among other things.

The buses offer space for eleven people each and can reach speeds of up to 20 km/h. They are equipped with several cameras and lidar sensors that detect obstacles as well as people and objects on the road. In such cases, the vehicles brake automatically. Two emergency stop buttons and a camera are fitted in the vehicle. An accompanying person travels in each of the autonomous shuttles. They can help with getting in and out of the vehicle and can also stop the vehicle manually at any time in an emergency.
