The automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler has signed a purchase agreement with Semikron to acquire 51% of the shares in Compact Dynamics, a manufacturer of high-performance electric motors.
Example of an electric motor with integrated power electronics co-developed by Compact Dynamics as part of the GroAx project: Thanks to its compact design and low system weight of just 14 kg, it is particularly suitable as a drive for lightweight electric vehicles or as a hybrid component.

Schaeffler and Compact Dynamics have had a long-standing partnership, including the development of the electric drive for the Audi ABT Schaeffler team in the electric racing series FIA Formula E. By acquiring a majority interest and securing an option to acquire the remaining shares in mid-2018, the Schaeffler Group intends to gain significant expertise in developing and manufacturing its own electric motors for automotive applications. The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017; the parties have agreed not to disclose the details.
At the same time as the acquisition of Compact Dynamics, Schaeffler and Semikron have also agreed to cooperate on the development of power electronics systems and the integration of power electronics components.
