Daimler shows all-electric truck

With the Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck, Daimler Trucks is presenting a fully electric truck with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26 tons for the first time. The market launch of this technology is conceivable for the manufacturer at the beginning of the next decade.

The technical starting point for the 'Urban eTruck' is a heavy three-axle distribution truck from Mercedes-Benz. However, the developers at Daimler Trucks have also rethought the drive concept: the entire conventional drive train is replaced by an electrically driven rear axle with electric motors directly next to the wheel hubs. Their maximum output is 2 x 125 kW, the maximum torque 2 x 500 Nm. In conjunction with the gear ratio, the torque at the wheel reaches 11,000 Nm.

The energy supply is provided by a battery pack consisting of three modules of lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 212 kWh, which are housed crash-proof within the frame. This results in a range of up to 200 km - which corresponds to a typical day trip in distribution transport. The modular battery configuration can be individually adapted by adding or removing battery packs, depending on the desired range.

The 'Urban eTruck' is connected to the charging station via the Europe-wide standardized CCS type 2 plug. With a charging capacity of 100 kW, the completely discharged batteries are 100% full in two to three hours.
