Growth in drive technology and electrification

ABB Germany recorded stable order intake and sales in the 2019 financial year despite the weakening economy. The Drive Technology and Electrification divisions performed particularly well.

ABB's CEO Hans-Georg Krabbe will leave the Executive Board and ABB by mutual agreement on December 31, 2020. A decision on his successor is still to be made.

Overall, incoming orders rose by 1% compared to the same period last year to EUR 2.82 billion. This increase was mainly due to domestic business, which grew by 9%. Sales increased by 1% compared to the previous year to EUR 2.81 billion.

In the course of 2019, the previous organizational structure was dissolved and ABB was realigned. As part of this, the four new business units Electrification, Industrial Automation, Drive Technology and Robotics & Factory Automation were set up more independently. At the same time, another change project was implemented in Germany with the spin-off of the electricity grid business to Hitachi.

The business divisions in detail

The Drive Technology division performed particularly well in the 2019 reporting period: at EUR 351 million, order intake was up 25% on the previous year, while sales increased by 12% to EUR 315 million. The division benefited in particular from several large orders in the rail technology sector.

The development of incoming orders in the Robotics & Factory Automation division was characterized by the reluctance to invest in the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors. It fell by 8% to 532 million euros. Sales rose by 1% to EUR 539 million.

In the Industrial Automation division, both incoming orders and sales were stable overall. Incoming orders amounted to EUR 522 million and sales to EUR 509 million, both down 1% on the previous year.

The Electrification division, by far the largest, recorded a 6% increase in incoming orders to EUR 1.5 billion in 2019. Sales also grew by 6% and amounted to EUR 1.48 billion. The positive business development is primarily due to the increased demand for solutions for intelligent, digitally networked residential buildings (smart homes) and functional buildings (smart buildings) as well as for digital technologies for the expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. ABB is also a provider of fast-charging solutions for electric vehicles and has sold over 13,000 DC fast-charging stations in more than 80 countries to date.
