Here, master craftsmen earn more than academics with a bachelor's degree

A new study by Compensation Partner shows that the IT sector pays handsomely. At over 78,000 euros, one professional group even tops the salary of security experts.

According to the study, the salaries of IT managers rose by 3% in 2019, while those of specialists and experts increased by 1.5%.

The highest salaries in the IT industry are currently earned by specialists in consulting and analysis. Here, annual incomes averaging 78,710 euros are on offer. They even top IT security experts with 73,919 euros per year and software developers in the back-end sector with 73,152 euros per year.

"In recent years, IT security experts have always dominated the salary ranking. This year, they were overtaken by IT consultants for the first time," says Philip Bierbach, Managing Director of Compensation Partner.

Employees in 1st level support are in last place in the evaluation with 37,172 euros. In 2nd level support, the annual salary is 44,647 euros. Database administrators earn around 49,398 euros.

Managers earn six-figure salaries - even in small companies

Anyone who wants to become a manager can look forward to lavish salaries. Even in small companies with fewer than 100 employees, IT managers earn an average of 105,946 euros. The highest salaries can be found in large companies with over 1,001 employees: IT managers earn an average of 143,252 euros.

The study also examines salaries according to educational qualifications.

The result: IT specialists with a degree earn an average of 51,593 euros. Those with a master's degree earn around 57,094 euros, which is more than their colleagues with a bachelor's degree. According to the study, they are only just behind at 56,880 euros. Employees with a Master's degree, on the other hand, earn 69,985 euros. IT specialists with a doctorate earn the most, with an average annual salary of 82,346 euros.

Top sector: biotechnology

The front-runner in the sector comparison is biotechnology with a salary level 39 percent above the overall average. This means that IT experts in this sector earn an average of 39% more than their colleagues across all sectors. This is followed by the semiconductor industry (+30 percent) and mechanical engineering (+26 percent). Bringing up the rear are call centers (-31 percent), temporary employment agencies (-20 percent) and hospitals (-16 percent).

IT salaries according to professional experience

Career starters with up to two years of professional experience earn around 51,688 euros. With 3 to 5 years of experience, employees in the IT industry earn 54,085 euros per year and with 9 to 12 years, 59,233 euros. Those with more than thirteen years in the business earn an average of 72,572 euros per year.

For the study, Compensation Partner examined 12,073 data records from over 170 companies.
