Two new coreless high-current sensors

The direct-imaging 'OLCI' (Open-Loop Coreless Integral) sensors from LEM measure direct currents from 2 to 42 kA without surge current limitation and have a large opening for measuring high currents on large busbars with a bandwidth of up to 1 MHz.

LEM offers two versions of the high current sensors: 'FRS' for primary busbar openings of 104 mm x 22 mm and 'FL' for openings up to 300 mm x 100 mm. As it is a divisible transformer, the FL can be opened and fitted directly to any position on the busbar without having to open the busbar. This simplifies installation and maintenance. According to the manufacturer, the sensors consume 85% less energy than comparable compensation transformers, which saves up to 150 kWh of energy over a year. As the FRS has no magnetic core, no secondary copper winding, but an integrated Rogowski coil and a series of Hall elements, it lowers material costs and reduces power loss. The design allows easy mounting on the busbar and reduces the number of fixings required. Both sensors are made from a material that is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. The sensors are suitable for applications in the railroad sector, in high-performance wind turbines and hydrogen electrolysers. They can also be used in industrial drives with low- and medium-voltage frequency converters, for induction welding and for monitoring in DC grids.
