Under the sign of safety

The 'Forum Safety & Security' will take place from September 12 to 13 in the Stadthalle Sindelfingen (plus basic seminar on September 11). In addition to the top-class keynotes, the extensive program has now also been confirmed.

The focus in Sindelfingen is equally on security and safety.

After Nikishin, Holger Laible, Digital Factory Division of Siemens, will give the second keynote. He will present the content of current IEC publications on safety / security (e.g. IEC TR 63069 from TC 65 / WG 20) and ACOS Guide 120. Practical examples will be used to illustrate a real implementation of these papers and their approach will be discussed.

Participants will then be able to find out about the following topics in four parallel tracks:

  • Methods/Tools
  • Industry
  • Automotive
  • Medical technology

The industry track

The industry track makes it clear how much the Industry 4.0 era is significantly shaping the topics of safety and security. This is because modern production systems enable networking and connection 'to the outside world' - which entails many risks. There are various scenarios, ranging from data theft and interference in production to the manipulation of safety-relevant mechanisms, which poses a direct threat to employees. The "Industry" session of the Forum Safety & Security helps to answer the question: How do I make my machine or system both 'safe' and 'secure'?

The presentations will show what a targeted attack on a safety device actually looks like and what requirements are placed on security solutions for industrial networks. The session will also shed light on legal and technical regulations relating to cyber security. The industry session will also provide answers to urgent safety questions: What is the situation regarding safety in the event of conversions and significant changes to machines? How can safety-related application programs for machines be specified and validated? Last but not least, robotics will also be discussed: For example, what the situation is with collaborative heavy-duty robotics or how radar-based human detection can be used for safeguarding.

Basic seminar on functional safety

The day before, on September 11, 2018, the basic seminar "Functional Safety" will take place with Dr. Olaf Winne, Managing Director of Lamtec Leipzig. He will provide an introduction to the comprehensive topic of functional safety for developers and managers.

Participants will be taught the basics that lead from the safety function in the process to the development and validation of suitable hardware and software. Particular attention is paid to IEC 61508 as the basis for safety-relevant standards, but deviations from other standards are also addressed. The increasing importance of information security is dealt with in a separate chapter and rounds off the basic seminar.

The aim of the seminar is to understand the importance and technical principles of secure embedded systems, to classify the necessary formal processes and documentation and to be able to establish a practical reference.

The detailed program can be found on the homepage of the Forum Safety & Security 2018.
