One third of industrial companies with a security incident

According to a recent Kaspersky study, which surveyed 320 cybersecurity managers responsible for industrial control systems worldwide in April/May 2018, 31% of companies had experienced at least one cybersecurity incident in the past year.

The survey was conducted by the CXP Group on behalf of Kaspersky Lab.

From production lines to robots: in the age of Industry 4.0, it is increasingly important to protect industrial control systems (ICS) and operational technology (OT) from cyber threats. In addition to the 31% of industrial companies affected by an incident, more than three quarters (77%) are concerned that their organization could become the target of a cyber security incident involving their industrial control networks. Eight percent are unable to say and ten percent do not measure such incidents.

While cybersecurity awareness is present among industrial control system decision makers - more than three-quarters of respondents said cybersecurity is a top priority for them - the Kaspersky study reveals the cyber threats industrial organizations have faced at the shop-floor or ICS/OT level over the past 12 months. Further results of the study:

  • two thirds (64%) of companies have experienced at least one conventional malware or virus attack;
  • 30% of companies suffered a ransomware attack;
  • a quarter (27%) had suffered an incident due to employee errors and actions;
  • 20% had to deal with threats related to third-party providers such as partners or suppliers;
  • targeted attacks fell by more than half compared to the previous year (from 36% to 16%);

New challenge: SCADA in the cloud

15% of industrial companies are already using cloud solutions for their SCADA control systems, with a further 25% planning to do so in the next twelve months. However, the introduction of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and cloud-based systems also brings new IT security challenges for industrial companies. For more than half of companies (54%), the increased risks and the implementation of measures for the coming year are a major cyber security challenge.
