More targeted attacks on industrial companies

According to Kaspersky Lab, the demand for zero-day exploits for industrial control systems on the black market increased significantly in 2017. Specific malware targeting vulnerabilities in automation components can therefore be expected in 2018.

According to Kaspersky, targeted attacks on industrial companies have recently increased by more than a third.

28% of industrial companies recently surveyed by Kaspersky Lab have been confronted with a targeted attack in the recent past - an increase of eight percentage points compared to the previous year. Half (48%) of industrial companies also say they do not have sufficient visibility into potential cyber threats their organization could face. Given the lack of insight into the network, 87% of respondents agree that the security incidents recorded were complex. As cyberattacks become more complex, it takes industrial companies on average several days (34%) to several weeks (20%) to detect a security incident. Another problem is that around half (49%) of the companies surveyed accuse their own employees of not following IT security guidelines properly.

Commenting on these findings, Andrey Suvorov, Head of Critical Infrastructure Protection Business Development at Kaspersky Lab, said: "Cyberattacks on industrial control systems have become the undisputed number one concern for many. The good news is that the majority of industrial market players are aware of the threats that currently exist and will be relevant in the near future. Therefore, it is crucial to implement a complex security solution that is specifically designed to protect automated industrial environments and is highly flexible and configured according to the technological processes of each organization."
