Atos wants to take over Gemalto

The French IT service provider Atos is planning to take over the Dutch smart card manufacturer Gemalto. The offer amounts to a total of around 4.3 billion euros in cash, Atos announced in Paris on December 11, 2017.

That is 46 euros per share - a premium of 36% on the closing price on December 11, 2017.

The French company assured that it was a friendly offer. According to their own statements, they had already approached Gemalto's management with their offer on November 28. They have now decided to go public. However, Atos is still open to discussions with Gemalto's Board of Directors.

The merger would create a leading company in cyber security and digital services, Atos explained. The French company had already acquired the IT subsidiary SIS from Siemens years ago. Gemalto, on the other hand, is primarily known for its products and services relating to bank and other smart cards.
