Robot deployment via rental model!

Making robotics accessible to small and medium-sized companies via a rental model: this was the claim made by the start-up Coboworx in 2019. Jan Quast explains the status quo.

Mr. Quast, what has happened since you started the company three years ago?

Jan Quast: We now see ourselves as a leading online platform for robot solutions. Our offering is very comprehensive, from consulting to hardware and software packages to a wide range of services, training and support and, of course, our robot rental model.

How do you differ from the competition?

Quast: In a nutshell, we are very agile and close to the customer, and above all we act at high speed and with great price transparency. We offer SMEs an initial assessment including a 3D layout and target price in just 48 hours. In this way, we help newcomers in particular to find answers to questions such as: Is automation worthwhile for me? Can I trust myself to do this without robot experts in-house? How much does it cost?

We are also currently developing another feature for our online platform: the Coboworx configurator. A prospective customer can use it to conveniently describe the key data of the application to be automated with just a few clicks using a smartphone on the couch or a computer at their desk. In no time at all, the right robot solution for palletizing, for example, is configured in real time, meaning that the prospective customer is no longer dependent on the presence of a contact person or fixed office hours. We want to inspire SMEs - and especially newcomers - to discover these robot solution technologies for themselves using new methods.

What has worked exactly as you imagined over the last three years?

Quast: We now have many inquiries for exciting projects from many different sectors. What they all have in common is that they are looking for a simple, quick solution that can usually be adapted to an existing production process. In particular, we didn't expect the positive response to our 'Robo on subscription' offer to this extent.

What didn't work out in your plans as you had imagined? And how did you make adjustments?

Quast : As a young and agile start-up, we are constantly learning and growing. We regularly question the status quo in the industry, sometimes make mistakes, get up again and learn from them. Just a year ago, we wanted to enter the market with a wide range of applications and robot solutions. Today we know that entering the market via palletizing can be a good starting point for continuous growth. In addition, we may soon also develop collaborative robots that automate other applications such as loading and unloading machines. One thing is for sure: we will not stop at a 4-axis palletizer.

What developments do you currently have in the pipeline?

In particular, a palletizing solution that can be flexibly integrated at the end of a production line like a modular system is in the starting blocks. With a new type of palletizing robot, we will therefore be represented on all digital channels from 25 April 2022 and are already working on the first projects.
