RoboCup World Championship 2018
Germany is the soccer world champion!
If not in Russia, then in Canada: robots from German universities recently beat the international competition in soccer at the RoboCup World Cup. But the robotics competition in Montréal was not just about soccer. A look back.
The soccer disciplines of the RoboCup robotics competition are becoming increasingly similar to the flesh-and-blood game of soccer. This was also the case at the 22nd RoboCup World Cup, which took place in Montréal (Canada). Compared to the German national team in Russia, the robo-soccer players were more successful.

Until then, research teams from universities around the world are working on their robots - particularly in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. As a central discipline, robots play soccer in various leagues. In recent years, other visionary application disciplines have been added - such as smart robots as helpers in rescue operations, in the household and in industrial production. Computer&AUTOMATION lists the disciplines in which the German robot teams scored points this year in a picture gallery:
Since 1997, the World Robot Championship has been held at various venues around the world: Last year still in Nagoya, Japan, the 22nd round of the RoboCup went to Montréal, Canada. Around 4,000 students and scientists from 35 countries and around 5,000 robots competed against each other at the end of June 2018.
The robotics competition is backed by a global community with over 10,000 members. A German regional committee promotes the RoboCup initiative in Germany by organizing and holding the qualifying rounds for the world championship on local soil - the 'RoboCup German Open' in Magdeburg.
The next venue for the 2019 RoboCup World Championship has already been decided: Sydney in Australia.
