Smart pasture fence for farmers

Inspection rounds to check pasture fences and their functionality are a thing of the past for farmers. At least if the companies Horizont Group and Mobile2b have their way. Their IoT solution can provide information about the condition of the fence via an app.

With the help of the IoT solution, farmers can monitor the condition of their pasture fences at any time and from anywhere and "above all, intervene quickly if there is a fault", says Armin Kühn, Head of Development at Horizont. This is of great importance, as there are always serious accidents due to escaped grazing animals and the duty of care lies with the livestock owner.

The manufacturer of safety products for agriculture brought the software developer Mobile2b from Cologne on board to implement the digitalization project. The expert for app and IoT solutions provided support in finding the right interaction between IIoT technology (such as sensors integrated into the pasture fence device), mobile data connections (SIM card) and the digitalization platform.

In the jointly developed solution, sensors measure values such as battery voltage or fence voltage. If there are deviations from the standard or failures, a push message is automatically sent to the farmer's app. Even if the device needs more power to maintain performance, for example, the system automatically generates a warning message. Farmers also don't have to worry about the devices being lost or stolen. The pasture fencing devices are equipped with an anti-theft device via GPS. This means that users always know where their devices are at any given time.

The Horizont Group intends to develop further products and digital business models for agriculture based on this IoT solution. According to Head of Development Armin Kühn, the app platform could soon be used to monitor barns via video or manage vehicle fleets.
