AI-supported visual inspection

PTC has added a component to the augmented reality solution 'Vuforia' that simplifies visual inspection in production: 'Step Check' guides employees step by step through the inspection tasks with context-sensitive work instructions.

The instructions are displayed on the physical product to be checked. Step Check also detects improper assembly, missing or misaligned parts and similar errors based on artificial intelligence (AI). Thanks to color-coded graphics that the tool displays in real time on the part or product in question, employees can see at a glance whether it has passed the inspection step. In addition, the test results are automatically documented and dashboards are created to analyze the tests performed.

The AI model is trained in two ways: firstly using 3D CAD models of the parts or products to be tested, and secondly using examples of passed and failed tests. When using Step Check, the AI models learn from the decisions of the employees and thus continuously improve the results. Thanks to Vuforia's computer vision capabilities, the tool can also recognize things that are not included in the 3D CAD models, such as stickers or labels.

PTC 's SaaS AR solution, Vuforia Expert Capture, enables the quick and easy creation of step-by-step AR work instructions.
