Wonderware Software

Lukas Dehling,

What is behind 'Prometheus'?

At SPS IPC Drives 2016, Schneider Electric presented Wonderware Prometheus - a configuration tool for all components of an industrial automation system. Rupert Krümpel, Sales Manager at Wonderware, explains what it is all about.

Everything under control with one configuration tool for all components? That's what the Prometheus software from Wonderware is all about.

Mr. Krümpel, what all can be configured with 'Prometheus'?
Krümpel:
Wonderware Prometheus is a universal configuration solution that programs, configures and documents the control code for the entire control technology of a plant, from the operating system to the PLC through to the I/O level. With this solution, we are going beyond the capabilities of existing control and SCADA/HMI software. Until now, many different editors have been used in companies, especially in systems with control systems from different manufacturers. Our new tool should now suffice for this.

Rupert Krümpel: "With Prometheus, it is possible for anyone to create and use control logic and visualization elements, regardless of the system used."

And what are the limits of the system?
Krümpel:
As Prometheus uses the interfaces of the hardware manufacturer's programming software to transfer the created configuration, only systems whose programming or configuration software discloses the necessary interfaces can be managed. So far, these include systems such as Siemens S7-400, Rockwell CLX, Schneider Electric Unity, Foxboro DCS, Raspberry Pi, Emerson Delta V, ABB 800 XA and GE Simplicity.

How can the individual controllers be controlled and programmed via Prometheus?
Krümpel:
The layout of the SCADA and control hardware in the system can be defined in the Prometheus configuration. As soon as the configuration is complete and the result is to be loaded into the hardware, the code for the individual systems is stored as an xml file. This code is then transferred by the so-called loader to the interface of the corresponding programming software and transferred to the target system.

What else is needed for Prometheus to establish itself on the market?
Krümpel:
The success of the software depends on the number of available loaders on the one hand and on the need to standardize the control logic and associated visualization system-wide on the other.
