The original idea came from the SmartFactory-KL. The association is based at DFKI and has been a pioneer in the field of smart production for 14 years. The work and research results from Kaiserslautern have been spreading since 2011 under the buzzword Industry 4.0. The term has now established itself internationally. Organizations have been founded in all industrialized regions of the world to promote or coordinate digitalized production and research at a national level.

As early as 2017, the EU expressed the desire to bring the now numerous activities in many member states under one roof and thus strengthen Europe's position on the global market. Under the leadership of Flanders Make (Belgium), Brainport Industries (Netherlands) and SmartFactory-KL/Germany, the SmartFactory-EU EEIG has now been founded with its headquarters in Kaiserslautern. The addition EEIG indicates that the company is based on EU law.

"The cooperation with our colleagues from Flanders and Kaiserslautern gives us the opportunity to exchange knowledge about Industry 4.0 technologies and develop joint activities," says John Blankendaal, Managing Director of Brainport Industries, adding: "The manufacturing industry does not stop at national borders, so it makes sense in terms of innovation to strengthen connections at European level." Prof. Detlef Zühlke adds: "All European operators of comparable research and demonstration centers around Industry 4.0 are invited to become members and lend a strong voice to our cause and thus to the European economy".
