How to turn the Raspberry Pi into a desktop PC
The Pi Desktop transforms a Raspberry Pi into a fully functional, Linux-based desktop computer in an elegant housing. The kit was developed by element14.
Combined with the Raspberry Pi, the Pi Desktop available from Farnell offers users all the features they would expect from a traditional PC, including WiFi, Bluetooth, a real-time clock, an mSATA solid-state drive interface, an optional camera and a power switch. A solid-state drive and Raspberry Pi Camera are available separately.
The result is a simple and elegant solution for Raspberry Pi fans who want to turn their Raspberry Pi into a visually appealing desktop computer in a matter of minutes. Cluttered bundles of cables are no longer necessary and users no longer have to compromise on peripheral functionality. The Pi Desktop can be connected to a display via an HDMI interface.
The optimized functions of the extended SSD memory (up to 1 TB) create the basis for a highly robust and reliable system. As the Raspberry Pi can be booted directly via the SSD, users can also look forward to a particularly fast start-up process. The integrated power switch makes the Pi Desktop easy to operate. Thanks to an intelligent and safe power regulator, users no longer need to remove the power adapter from the Pi board, but can simply switch the system on or off like a normal computer or laptop.
The kit includes a plug-in board with the mSATA interface, an intelligent power controller and a real-time clock; a visually appealing case; a heat sink; a USB adapter (Micro-Type A); the real-time clock battery; and all necessary spacers and screws.
The Pi Desktop has been developed by Premier Farnell's element14 brand and once again demonstrates the company's expertise from research through to the production of a product and subsequent launch. The kit is available exclusively from Farnell element14 and its resellers.
