Why makers and professionals use the Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi is appreciated by makers and professionals alike - and not just because of its low price. There is a second reason.

Farnell has conducted a worldwide survey of Raspberry Pi users. It shows why and how professionals and makers use the Raspberry Pi.

The survey shows that the Raspberry Pi is not only popular with makers, but also with professionals. They use it for prototyping and proof-of-concept work, especially for IoT and industrial automation and control applications. Another point that has emerged: Many are turning to the Raspberry Pi's HAT extensions. They make many new applications possible without the need to develop custom hardware.

Key findings from the Farnell Raspberry Pi survey include the following:

  • A third of respondents confirmed that they use Raspberry Pi for personal projects, and more than a third of developers use Raspberry Pi for proof-of-concept and prototyping work. Other uses include test benches/test systems and production applications.
  • 34% of Makers use the Raspberry Pi exclusively for their personal projects.
  • Makers stated that price was the main reason for using the Raspberry Pi, closely followed by its performance and their own familiarity with the product. When professional developers choose to use the Raspberry Pi, they are more interested in ease of use than other factors.
  • Makers named the Pi camera and touchscreen as their favorite accessories.
  • Professional developers use the Raspberry Pi predominantly for IoT applications, closely followed by industrial automation and control. Other notable applications include robotics, display and consumer applications.

"This survey clearly shows the versatility of the Raspberry Pi," says Hari Kalyanaraman, Global Head of Single Board Computers at Farnell.
