The money comes from the federal government, the state, the universities themselves and the Helmholtz Association. Stuttgart is home to the Hazel Hen supercomputer, which is around one hundred thousand times faster than a laptop. It is ranked 17th among the world's 500 most powerful computers. Hazel Hen is to be replaced by a new supercomputer called Hawk in 2019, according to Michael Resch, Head of the High Performance Computing Center at the University of Stuttgart. The investment costs are estimated at around 38 million euros. Hawk is expected to be five to six times faster than its predecessor Hazel Hen.
