Kontron / embedded world 2018

Focus on edge computing

Kontron is increasingly pushing the topic of edge computing. The company underlined this at embedded world with a cooperation with NXP and a new software platform.

Kontron is positioning the Susietec platform as a link between devices. The solution converts protocols, filters data and, if necessary, processes it directly on site.

"With our NXP technology in combination with the hardware and software expertise of Kontron and S&T , we are combining the strengths of both companies," said Tareq Bustami, Senior Vice President of Digital Networking at NXP, explaining the cooperation with Kontron. The two companies intend to work together on the development of Industry 4.0 solutions using ARM-based i.MX and Layerscape processors from NXP.

Specifically, this includes i.MX-based SMARC 2.0 and Q7 Computer-on-Modules. In addition, Kontron plans to launch modules with Layerscape SoCs including LS1028 later this year to support its own Industry 4.0 edge gateways as well as designs from Kontron customers. The resulting products rely on both 'Microsoft Azure IoT' and TSN technology. The collaboration is intended to "provide exceptional technology for innovative IoT and edge computing solutions", as Laurent Remont, CTO of Kontron and S&T, emphasizes.

In addition to the hardware products, Kontron will also support users in the future with the new 'Susietec' software platform, which is designed to analyze and process the resulting data in the context of Industry 4.0 applications. According to Kontron, the platform dissolves the previous boundaries between data generation, data processing and data provision - and thus enables the merging of IT and OT.

Susietec uses the computing power of the local network to control time-critical processes on site. Data is temporarily stored locally, compressed and forwarded to the cloud according to predefined rules. The aims are to increase process security, reduce bandwidth and thus save operating costs, as well as meet the real-time requirements of the Industrial IoT.

With the platform, companies should be able to take a hybrid and scalable approach to their IoT scenarios by combining the advantages of on-premise solutions with a cloud infrastructure. To this end, Susietec is integrated into Kontron's gateway, fog computer and server products, many of which are already certified for 'Microsoft Azure'.
