Working group for network security established

The CC-Link Partner Association (CLPA) has set up a working group on the security of industrial Ethernet. The aim is to create a guide for users who want to build secure networks with the open Gigabit Ethernet technology CC-Link IE.

Together with its partners, the CLPA wants to develop framework guidelines to ensure that the industry can continue to place its trust in technologies such as CC-Link IE.

The convergence of IT and OT (Operational Technology) as a result of the widespread introduction of Ethernet and Internet technology in manufacturing has brought security concerns into focus in recent years, especially after a series of spectacular cyberattacks. While the manufacturing industry is concerned with securing the hardware, the CLPA wants to address the potential for greater network security without compromising the field level.

In particular, the planned guide will include strategies for users who want to work with CLPA's Seamless Message Protocol (SLMP) and CC-Link IE Field Basic, where both cyclic and transient communication is transmitted as general IP communication. The working group for network security set up for this purpose is based on the international IEC 62443 series of standards for industrial communication networks and corresponding security systems. This set of standards covers all important aspects of securing systems, such as setting up a security program, use cases, technical requirements, etc.

A number of CLPA partners will be represented in the working group, including Belden-Hirschmann, Cisco Systems, Hilscher, HMS, Mitsubishi Electric, Moxa and Panduit.
