What do you think?
TSN alone is nothing!
Yes, TSN is the new basic technology for convergent real-time communication. But which protocols will actually be based on the TSN layers and become established on the market has not yet been decided. In this article, four protagonists have their say.
TSN is regarded as the new basic technology for convergent real-time communication - in industry, in the automotive sector, for audio/video and in the IT industry. It is important to bear in mind that although TSN is an essential building block, it cannot be used on its own and always requires additional protocols at the upper levels.
After focusing on fundamental aspects of the technology in the first three parts of the TSN series, the question now is
How can TSN be used in combination with other protocols in an industrial environment?
There are very different approaches to this, both in terms of the use and
the use and range of TSN, but also with regard to the level of interoperability.
interoperability.
To provide an overview of the fundamental trends, four important players will have their say, representing three fundamentally different paradigms.
represent three fundamentally different paradigms. The interview partners explain how they classify and use TSN,
what technological impact this has, what the current state of development is and what they think about interoperability and the integration of IT systems as part of the digitalization of production:
The OPC Foundation's TSN approach
The TSN approach of the Profibus user organization
The TSN approach of the Ethercat Technology Group
The TSN approach of the CC-Link Partner Association
A common sticking point for all approaches is the configuration of the TSN network, which will also have a significant impact on interoperability. You can read about the different approaches and how they work in detail in the upcoming part 5 of our TSN series in September.
What do you think? Particularly in view of the controversial content of this year's discussion, we - and our interview partners - look forward to your feedback, questions and comments.
And one final tip: The current status quo on the burning issues regarding TSN, OPC UA and 5G will be available on October 7 and 8 at our annual - this year virtual - TSN/A Conference.
Yours, Florian Frick and Meinrad Happacher
