TSN plus OPC UA

Meinrad Happacher,

The "shapers" put the pressure on

Is OPC UA plus TSN the exclusive industrial communication solution of the future? The so-called "Shaper Group" is now emphasizing this conviction with a white paper. Computer & AUTOMATION offers it for download.

TSN plus OPC UA at field level: B&R showed at SPS IPC Drives 2017 that this is not a utopian dream with a demo wall featuring 200 TSN nodes.

OPC UA plus TSN will soon play a major role as a communication solution in industrial automation - the players in industrial automation now agree on this. But where will the limits of its use lie? There is currently no consensus in the industry on this point. Stakeholders - such as the Profibus user organization - are convinced that the future belongs to the communication combination of OPC UA plus TSN, albeit limited to the field of application from the cloud down to the control level. They are convinced that the classic field level of the automation pyramid will continue to be covered by solutions such as Profinet IRT, Ehtercat and Sercos in the future.

The Shaper Group, a loose association of now 17 IT and industrial automation manufacturers, is different: "We assume that OPC UA plus TSN will quickly emerge as a game changer in the field of industrial automation, the first and only candidate for building a holistic communication infrastructure from the sensor to the cloud" - according to an excerpt from the latest white paper "OPC UA TSN - A new Solution for Industrial Communication".
