Around 21 million Profinet devices on the market

The Profibus User Organization (PNO) has published the figures for the nodes installed in the past year. Profinet and IO-Link in particular have seen strong growth.

According to PNO, 20.9 million Profinet devices are now installed in production plants.

With the 4.5 million Profinet devices launched on the market in 2017, the record number of the previous year was increased by 25%. This means that by the end of 2017, around 21 million Profinet devices had automated production, according to the PNO.

Over 8 million IO-Link devices are currently in use, more than 50% compared to the previous year.

After several years of decline, the annual figure for Profibus remained almost unchanged from the previous year at 2.3 million installed devices. The total number is approaching the 60 million mark. A comparison of the two annual figures shows that almost twice as many Profinet devices were launched on the market last year than Profibus devices. At 6.8 million, the sum of the two annual figures represents an all-time high. The development of Profibus in process automation is also stable: with the annual figure of 0.9 million achieved in 2017, 11.5 million Profibus devices have now been incorporated into process technology systems.

According to the PNO, the development of Profisafe continues to show a very positive trend with the highest annual value achieved to date of almost 2 million nodes brought onto the market, which corresponds to growth of 25% compared to the previous year. In total, Profisafe is heading towards the figure of 9 million.

As in previous years, IO-Link set a record in two respects in 2017: firstly, 2.8 million IO-Link devices were brought onto the market, and secondly, growth was more than 50% compared to the previous year. This brings the total number of installed IO-Link devices to more than 8 million.
