ODVA develops 'cloud specification'
The ODVA has announced a new technical initiative to develop a 'Common Industrial Cloud Interface Specification'. The starting signal for this is to be given in mid-2016 with the formation of a corresponding Special Interest Group (SIG).
The aim of the project launched by the ODVA is to develop standards for the gateway and interface technology required to transfer data between the cloud and CIP-enabled industrial control systems (ICS) using Ethernet/IP and Devicenet devices. The work specifically comprises two elements: a cloud gateway appliance (gateway) and an application program interface (API) for transferring data from the gateway to the cloud and from the cloud back to the ICS and the associated devices.
The new Common Industrial Cloud Interface is designed to be based on open and interoperable standards and accelerate an architectural transformation that embraces cloud computing with features such as device management, process analytics, notifications, remote access, virtualization and visualization. In addition, the solution will also support control capabilities in the future.
Last year, the ODVA announced the publication of specification enhancements for CIP Security, a collection of cybersecurity services within the Common Industrial Protocol. The organization also announced a new initiative to supplement the Ethernet/IP specification as part of new standards for time-sensitive networking (TSN).
