Edge Data Center for the smart factory
Atos, Siemens and Rittal are now entering into a partnership to enable the rapid development of IT infrastructures with high real-time data volumes.
The three companies want to offer edge data center solutions ranging from individual racks to turnkey data center containers. But what exactly is behind the so-called 'Intelligent Edge Data Centers' (IEDC)? The components of the solution include MindSphere, the cloud-based IoT operating system from Siemens and the new BullSequana Edge Computing servers and BullSequana S servers as well as Codex Cloud Industrial Supervision (CIS) from Atos. The OT (Operational Technology) infrastructure was developed by Rittal and designed as an edge data center.
The advantage of the solution is that the data center can be operated directly at the point of origin of the data. This allows IoT data to be processed in real time, enabling faster analysis of data streams and improved automation processes. On the IT infrastructure side, Atos and Siemens provide software solutions for IoT applications as well as edge solutions that support the collection, calculation and analysis of data.
Solution for edge computing
The IEDC is available in various performance classes, from a wall-mounted device or IT rack to a powerful and scalable data center container. The solution is intended for companies that have taken the step towards digitalization and therefore want to process large volumes of real-time data, for example in a smart manufacturing environment.
Such an IEDC can be linked to other edge data centers and form a network. This enables the gradual introduction of new or process-optimized applications and solutions in the company. The relevant data of each network node is available at the highest level on dashboards and enables a deep insight into monitoring, control and optimization using state-of-the-art data analysis.
The IEDCs will be available worldwide from Q3 2019 - with a particular focus on the EMEA and US economic areas in the first few months. Atos will market the solutions as a general contractor.
