In the '5G Application Lab' of the 'Center Connected Industry', a test environment for applications from the fields of logistics, production, mobility and energy is to be set up. Here, Ericsson and the Research Institute of Rationalization (FIR) at RWTH Aachen University want to implement various aspects of 5G mobile technology in practical Industry 4.0 use cases. The cooperation is part of Ericsson's '5G for Germany' program, which was presented last autumn 2016. The program aims to bring together companies from industry, the public sector and leading European universities with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of the German and European economy.

Just recently, Ericsson also presented '5G-ConnectedMobility', a cross-industry consortium for 5G research and development - particularly in the areas of vehicles and rail. Members of the project are Ericsson, the BMW Group, Deutsche Bahn, all three mobile communications providers Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica Deutschland and Vodafone, the 5G Lab Germany at TU Dresden, the Federal Highway Research Institute and the Federal Network Agency. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and the Bavarian Road Construction Administration are supporting the project.

The FIR has been implementing solutions for the digitalization of the entire industrial and commercial supply chain for years as part of industrial projects with partners from industry and research.
