"A brief history of AI"
What is artificial intelligence? What stages of development has it gone through so far? And where is it all heading? A five-minute explanatory film published by the "Learning Systems" platform to mark the start of the 'Year of Science 2019' provides answers.
The whole world is suddenly talking about artificial intelligence (AI) - although the beginnings of the technology date back to the 1950s. Since then, it has experienced a changeable development: the high-flying expectations of the American AI pioneers, who dreamed of machines as general problem solvers, were followed by phases of disillusionment and a renewed upswing.
In Germany, AI research has been conducted intensively since the 1980s. German scientists have made a name for themselves in the fields of speech understanding, image processing and robotics in particular. Groundbreaking successes have been achieved in autonomous driving and speech recognition in Germany.
There are various reasons for the global AI boom that has been observed since around 2010 - from the exponential increase in computing and storage power to improved AI methods and the huge amounts of data that are available via the internet, social media and industrially installed sensors in machines and everyday objects. Major progress is currently being made in AI-based assistance systems in particular: AI promises great improvements for medical diagnosis or traffic control in large cities.
Many things currently seem possible. However, many AI systems still do not function reliably enough - and not all of them are for the good of society. It is therefore important to have an informed public debate at an early stage about what AI can and should be able to do.
The explanatory film "A brief history of AI" published by the Learning Systems platform aims to provide the general public with an introduction to the topic of AI - and to encourage discussion.
