VISION 2024
VISION Award 2024 goes to Toshiba Teli Corporation
The VISION Award, endowed with 3,000 euros, goes to Toshiba Teli Corporation for "OneShotBRDF Technology: Revolutionizing Surface Flaw Detection on Glossy and Flat Materials" - a new development that the jury selected from over 60 submissions.
Jury member Dr. Chris Yates from Vision Ventures comments: "The VISION Award is unique. It makes no distinction between an innovative component or an innovative product. They are both treated equally. The award is given solely on the basis of overall innovation and impact - two areas where Toshiba Teli Corporation's entry undoubtedly scored highly."
Yates explains why Toshiba Teli Corporation was able to beat the competition: "The jury was impressed by the innovative technical approach to detecting very fine scratches and irregularities, particularly on glass-like or highly polished surfaces. Today, many products have such surfaces, often with extremely high quality requirements. The winning entry for the VISION Award describes a solution that is simple enough to be used by non-experts, but sensitive enough to detect defects down to a few millionths of a meter in size." In addition, Yates continues, the technology can also be used to assess surface roughness. For materials such as paints and coatings, where the microstructure of the surface can vary depending on the application process, roughness changes become visible as color differences.
The judges noted that the technology not only uses a novel optical technique, but also does not require software processing to increase the visibility of hard-to-detect defects in materials that are notoriously difficult to image. This suggests that the technology can be implemented in production or in-line systems and provide an immediate picture of all defects.
