In a letter to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, VDMA President Karl Haeusgen has called for German companies to be allowed to use the help of professional recruitment agencies when recruiting qualified workers from abroad. "Many of our companies feel overwhelmed by the task of actively searching the world for technicians who are willing to emigrate and are suitable for work in Germany," writes the VDMA President. "This is where professional recruitment agencies can provide valuable, if not crucial, assistance."

The two federal ministers recently announced in a joint newspaper article that they would reduce the legal hurdles for skilled workers wishing to immigrate. In particular, the recognition of foreign educational and professional qualifications is to be made easier. The VDMA expressly supports this, but is also calling for foreign skilled workers who want to come to Germany via a recruitment agency to be allowed to stay. "We probably agree in our assessment," Haeusgen writes to the ministers, "that the demand for skilled workers in Germany has now reached such an extent that every possibility must be seriously considered in order to get the problem under control." From the VDMA's point of view, this also includes creating the legal requirements in the Residence Act so that recruitment agencies can attract qualified workers from third countries to the German labor market.

Skills shortage in mechanical engineering is worsening

Current figures from the Ifo Institute show how serious the personnel situation in mechanical engineering companies already is. In July, 43% of companies in the mechanical engineering sector reported a production bottleneck due to a shortage of skilled workers. This was once again higher than the April figure of 39%, which is already the highest figure in the time series in the united Germany since 1991.
