Qualcomm Acquires AI Specialist Modular
Qualcomm plans to acquire the software company Modular. The acquisition is intended to strengthen the software foundation for generative and agent-based AI and accelerate the development of AI applications for edge, cloud, and data center environments.
Qualcomm has reached an agreement to acquire the U.S. software company Modular. With this acquisition, the company aims to expand its software capabilities in generative and agent-based AI and drive the development of AI applications across end devices, edge systems, and data centers.
Modular is developing an AI-native software platform that enables the deployment of AI models on various hardware architectures. According to the company, the platform supports central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), neural processing units (NPUs), and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) without requiring models to be re-adapted for each hardware platform.
Open Software Ecosystem Planned
Through this acquisition, Qualcomm aims to create a hardware-agnostic software layer that facilitates the deployment of AI applications across heterogeneous computing environments. The goal is to simplify the development and deployment of AI models for device manufacturers, cloud providers, software developers, and enterprises, as well as to improve the energy efficiency and flexibility of these systems.
Expansion of the Data Center Business
By integrating the Modular platform, Qualcomm aims to expand its strategy in the data center market. Among other things, the software is designed to optimize inference, orchestration, and deployment of AI applications in distributed systems. At the same time, the company plans to intensify its collaboration with developers, model providers, hyperscalers, and enterprise customers.
Modular was founded by a team that has contributed to key components of today's AI infrastructure. According to the company, it takes an open and vendor-neutral approach to AI software.
Completion Expected in the Second Half of the Year
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026, subject to the customary closing conditions and approval by the relevant regulatory authorities.
